The Tuscarora Township Police Department is a 24 hour, 7 day a week operation with office hours from 8 am until 4 pm Monday through Friday except holidays.
The Police Department is located at the rear of the Tuscarora Township
Municipal Building. If you arrive at the station and the door is locked, please use the phone next to the
door. This will connect you to 911 and to an officer.
Due to the limited office hours, Chief Wagner advises residents to dial 911 for all calls to the
department, not just emergencies.
The DDA is currently working on a project to create, extend, and update sidewalks
in the community. They will eventually provide pathways from the snowmobile parking lot south of town at the
township boundary as far north as the bridge over Indian River. All three phases are currently being
engineered by Fleis & Vandenbrink of Traverse City.
The DDA meetings are on the 3rd Monday of each month at 12:00 noon, and are held in the meeting room of
the Tuscarora Township Municipal Building located at 3546 S. Straits Highway. All meetings are open to the
public, who is encouraged to attend.
Tuscarora Township rents its meeting room to persons in the community, so long as they are not in use for Township, Library, or Police functions. They are rented on a first-come, first-served basis, with reservations taken up to 1 year in advance.
An Application for Use of Meeting Room and Use Policy (PDF file) must be completed and signed in order to use these facilities. Rental rates and contact phone numbers are included in these documents.
These documents are also available by contacting the Township Office Administrator.
Tuscarora Township has two cemeteries. Oakhill Cemetery is located off Chippewa Beach Road behind the Indian River Golf Course and Ohioville Cemetery is located off Rogers Rd. Graves are $225.00 each and you do not have to be a resident to purchase a grave. The Township will purchase back unused graves at the original purchase price.
The Cemetery Sexton is responsible for all opening and closing of burials. All terms and conditions are governed under the Tuscarora Township Cemetery
Ordinance #22.
The Indian River Area Library services approximately 4000 residents between Tuscarora, Mentor and Mullett Townships.
They have a large collection of books, video cassettes, books on cassette and magazine subscriptions.
The library is located in the Tuscarora Township Municipal Building.
Cooperation Park: This large park is located two miles south of downtown Indian River and covers 51.78 acres. The park also features a lighted ice rink for the winter months, a lighted sledding hill and cross-country ski trails that double as walking trails in the warmer months.

In 2005 Cooperation Park added a warming hut for the skating rink; and, new for the 2005-2006 winter season the park has its own Zambonie machine to condition the ice.
The Indian River Women's Club held their grand opening celebration in July for the pavilion they donated. To reserve the pavilion contact the Parks at 231.238.7865.
Burt Lake State Park:
A five acre state
park that has 380 modern and rustic campsites, a large beach and swim area on beautiful Burt Lake, a boat launch and a picnic area with a ball field.
DeVoe Beach: This township park is located on a large shallow cove, at the mouth of Indian River and Burt Lake. It is just a short walk from the middle of downtown Indian River.
The park has a large sandy beach and picnic area, and is the home of our annual 4th of July fireworks display, the Top O' Michigan Boat Races and the Indian River Chamber of Commerce family night during
Summerfest.
A fishing pier has been proposed for DeVoe Beach tentatively named Veteran's Pier. The following excerpt was submitted by Mike Ridley
(read the complete article):
The Tuscarora Township Parks Commission has been busy securing permits and preparing for a matching fund raising campaign (for Verteran's Pier). The application for up to 75% of the project will be submitted to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Trust Fund by the spring of 2008. The estimated cost of the project is $500,000. Our share of the matching funds will be $125,000. This money will be raised by donations from local service groups, private industry and citizens eager to see a beautiful addition to our community.
Veterans Pier will be an ideal place to just sit and relax, cast a line or watch a beautiful sunset. It will be a tremendous asset to our community as it enhances outdoor recreation and promotes the inland waterway as well as the entire Indian River area. Please
support this project in any way you can."
Donations for the proposed Veteran's Pier can be mailed to the Tuscarora Township Treasurer, PO Box 220, Indian River, MI 49749. Please reference "Veteran's Pier" on your check. If you have any questions, please contact the Tuscarora Township Administrator at 231-238-4220.
Marina Park:
Located at the intersection of the Indian River and Little Sturgeon is the new Marina Park. The park has benches for
viewing the rivers, docks for fishing and tables for picnics. The Marina Park Board has applied for a Boat Launch Grant to purchase the DNR property adjacent to the railroad
right-of-way. Final vision for the park includes day parking for boats, boat launch, vehicle and trailer
parking, overnight marina, band shell, children's playground and on-sight restroom and shower facilities.
Along the west side of the site is the Tuscarora Trail, a year-round recreational trail that follows the abandoned Cheboygan to Gaylord railroad bed. Nearby, on Straits Highway, are the Indian River Tourist Information Center, public restrooms, food, beverages, frozen treats, ice cream, fudge, clothing, and gift shops.
The Gaylord to Mackinaw City recreation trail officially reopened on October 13, 2007. The scenic 62 miles of abandoned railroad grade was resurfaced with crushed limestone and is open year round to walkers, bicyclists, snowmobiles and cross country skiers. A Grand Opening is scheduled for June 7, 2008, coordinating with the National Trails Day Ride. For a schedule of events visit the Top of Michigan Trails Council website at www.trailscouncil.org.
