DID YOU KNOW? Here is a survey done in 1840 by Mr. Mullett, the surveyor. It was published in 1841. Notice the Sturgeon River running directly into the Indian River. This was before it was rerouted in 1870. Also note that Mr. Mullett named the Indian River after himself, calling it Mullett River. Apparently that name did not stick. Also the name of the lake was "Burt's Lake." It also indicates that part of Columbus Beach, the Sturgeon Island and part of Barbara Avenue were underwater at that time. This was before the Sturgeon River re-route and the building of the chute at the mouth of the Indian River to control silt.
